Alexandra – Hope on Every Step

Alexandra, one of the most overcrowded and under-resourced communities, carries the weight of severe poverty. Many children arrived at school barefoot or in slippers, even during harsh winters. The donation drive brought a wave of joy as over 500 learners received strong, durable school shoes. On distribution day, the atmosphere was electric, filled with laughter, cheers, and pure excitement. Learners proudly paraded in their new footwear, some saying it was the first pair of brand-new shoes they had ever owned. One boy beamed with pride, declaring, “I want to be a lawyer, and now I look like one.” Teachers quickly observed that punctuality improved as walking became easier and safer. With new shoes, learners participated more actively in class, even taking on debates and leadership roles. Parents expressed gratitude, relieved to redirect scarce funds toward other school supplies. The initiative also encouraged local businesses and organizations to commit to future donations, inspired by the visible impact. For many children, the shoes meant more than protection—they represented hope, dignity, and a reminder that their dreams mattered. In Alexandra, every step taken in those shoes became a step toward possibility, unity, and resilience.

Soweto – Walking with Pride

In Soweto, hundreds of children faced the daily challenge of walking long distances barefoot to school. For many families, providing food already stretched their resources, leaving essentials like shoes far beyond reach. The school shoes donation drive became a beacon of hope, restoring dignity and pride to young learners. Over 600 children received properly fitted pairs, and the transformation was immediate. Teachers reported a visible change in confidence as learners walked taller, smiling as they entered their classrooms. One Grade 5 learner joyfully remarked, “I feel like I can run to school now.” Attendance rates improved, and children were better protected from harsh weather and injuries. Parents expressed heartfelt gratitude, relieved that their children could focus on learning instead of feeling embarrassed. Volunteers distributed shoes with warmth, ensuring every child felt special. The community united around the initiative, creating a ripple of joy and togetherness. For many learners, the teasing about worn-out footwear was replaced with pride in their appearance. Local leaders pledged ongoing support to sustain such programs. What seemed like a simple act of kindness grew into a movement of empowerment, proving that small steps can bring big changes. The Soweto story stands as a reminder that dignity fuels learning and builds resilience in children.

Atteridgeville – Steps Toward Success

In Atteridgeville, children often endured the embarrassment of wearing torn, ill-fitting shoes, sometimes even sharing pairs with siblings. This daily struggle caused discomfort and eroded their self-esteem. The donation drive brought relief to 450 learners who received brand-new school shoes that fit perfectly. Their smiles and excitement told a story of restored confidence. Parents proudly watched as their children walked into classrooms looking and feeling like they truly belonged. One mother shared, “Now my child looks like she belongs in class,” a sentiment echoed throughout the community. Teachers soon noticed a difference in participation and enthusiasm among learners, many of whom now raised their hands with confidence. For the children, new shoes represented more than comfort; they symbolized equality and dignity. Volunteers used the opportunity to inspire the learners, reminding them of the power of education and resilience. Younger learners hugged their shoes tightly, while older learners sighed with relief at no longer being teased. The initiative encouraged parents to keep children in school regularly, knowing they were better equipped. It also sparked conversations about broader educational support needs. In Atteridgeville, the gift of shoes became a step toward success, proving that dignity nurtures academic excellence.

A BENEFECTOR COMES ON BOARD

With the years following great uncertainty, the need to propel growth and restore hope after difficult times calls for true celebration when progress is made. The year 2020 promised to be a defining one for LNF. As we celebrated five years of empowering learners from South Africa’s townships, we proudly reached our initial milestone of improving access to educational support while continuing to provide tools and resources that create opportunities for our future leaders. Staying true to our vision of building each other through acts of care, the organization remains committed to investing in the dignity and success of our learners.

This year marked a significant achievement with the launch and success of our School Shoes Donation Drive. Through collective effort, we were able to provide hundreds of children with proper school shoes, ensuring that no learner had to walk barefoot or in worn-out footwear. The visible and immediate impact was not just in appearance but in confidence, attendance, and morale within classrooms.

A further blessing came when the organization secured an anonymous benefactor who deeply values the primary schools we serve and shares LNF’s vision that quality education begins with meeting learners’ basic needs. This benefactor has generously committed to matching every contribution made to our crowdfunding campaign, effectively doubling the impact—every R1 raised becomes R2.

To date, LNF has raised over R10,000, and with this match, the reach of our School Shoes Drive has expanded even further. This commitment comes at a crucial time, reinforcing our unwavering priority: ensuring that learners not only have access to education but do so with dignity, comfort, and pride.
